What is vicarious reinforcement?

Vicarious reinforcement refers to the process where an individual observes someone else being rewarded for a behavior and subsequently increases the likelihood of engaging in that behavior themselves. This concept is rooted in observational learning, where individuals recognize that certain actions can lead to desirable outcomes, not through direct experience but by watching others. When a person sees someone being positively reinforced for a specific behavior, they may feel encouraged to imitate that behavior, believing it will yield similar rewards for them.
